There are few labels that become shorthand for a lifestyle, but Prada is certainly one of them. From its humble beginnings as a Milanese leather company Fratelli Prada back in 1913, it burst on to the international fashion scene in the 1980s with the first black nylon Prada tote, as designed by the founder's granddaughter Miuccia. From nowhere Prada became a byword for sleek minimal chic.

Despite being one of the most instantly recognisable brand names on the planet, Prada has never been seen as bling. While its rivals were adopted by rappers and all the boys in the hood, Prada became the uniform of international architects, designers and artists - no wonder when it was endorsed by celebs the names in question were critically acclaimed actors such as John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe rather than fly-by-night B-movie heartthrobs.
