The famous Alice Ball House was designed by Philip Johnson, master architect of the ‘Harvard Five’ mid-century modernists. Johnson designed six homes in New Canaan, including his ‘Glass House’, which became the Alice Ball House for which his original plans still exist. Referred to as his ‘little jewel’, this sculpture of modern architecture is sited on the fashionable ‘Ridge’ known for its estates.

Constructed of masonry and glass with 12’ ceilings, the walls of glass surround the “social room”. Designed with a cross-axial plane, the design creates a carefully balanced interior space that flows seamlessly into the natural beauty of the landscape. Johnson used the ancient rule of the ‘golden triangle’. The simple lines of the kitchen reflect the minimalist spirit of the ‘Modernists’. The hall bathroom is completely tiled in slate, bringing the floor right up the walls to the ceiling. He introduced the theater dressing table and lighting to this bathroom.

The charming walled courtyard with its secret garden looks back on the bedroom wing of the house with the guest cottage on the right. Terraces, stone walls, and mature trees and plantings complete the landscape.

The house and guest cottage have been completely restored and contain 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, galley kitchen, large social room, a finished lower level, and a garage on 2.19 acres.

There is plenty of room for expansion and there have been some very creative suggestions made by interested architects. Also there is room to add a second building, creating a large estate.

This classical masterpiece has been well-published. It is an opportunity to own a significant architectural and historical piece of art!
